Roslyne Smith
Roslyne Smith is a South African-born, Chicago-based visual artist known for her vibrant, abstract oil paintings full of texture, energy, and expressive movement. Her journey began at age five, and after a successful career in digital design, she returned to her love of tactile painting-favoring impasto oils and palette knives over screens and styluses. Roslyne's work is created intuitively, without sketches or plans. She paints in layers, often working on several canvases at once, allowing images to emerge organically. Her style is heavily influenced by travel, nature, music, and personal emotion. Though abstract, her work often evokes water, florals, and landscapes through color and motion. She draws inspiration from artists like Modigliani and Monet, and while her work is her own, it echoes the spirit of the Impressionists she admires. Her paintings have been exhibited at Laughlin Gallery, Tremain Gallery, Lake Forest Art Fair, The Gallery, and The Guild, and are collected through designers, word of mouth, and her website. A passionate lifelong learner and educator, Roslyne regularly attends and teaches art workshops, and was recently invited to lead an art retreat in Normandy, France. Now an empty nester, Roslyne finds joy in her home studio. "I get to play, make a mess, and never pack away my toys." Painting keeps her grounded and inspired-even through Chicago's coldest winters. She also gives back through charity art donations, describing her art as "the gift that doesn't stop giving.
